ECA Open Day Sign
Lauriston Place
Edinburgh
Submitted by ecaGraphics

"One word sums this sign up - shameful - especially as it is advertising our college's Open Day. The layout and colours are uninspiring. There appears to be no structure or hierarchy to the typography. In addition the words Open Day are badly kerned. The metal structure with the college logo and URL saves this poster from being a complete disaster, hence the rating of D-. "

dogs in captivity
Edinburgh
Submitted by ecaGraphics

"Look into their eyes. Those dogs are overtly suffering.
They are begging you for mercy...
Release them...
-that's what I feel having seen this page of a catalogue.
Is it really a good idea to illustrate unhappy animals as means of advertising pet-cages? I'm not up for purchasing that.
But if I were... is a suffering dog included with each cage?

"I've never seen anything like that before.
I was going through a catalogue and I found this...
What is that for?
Those constructions resemble barbarian totems.
And look at this King Cat sitting proudly on the throne (pic 6) ...
Congratulations for invention"

But the display is simply confusing. It's too much going on there.
Please, don't put everything you have on a window display.
Oh.. and I also don't like the T-shirts on the right hand side..."

Pink Olive
West Nicolson Street
Edinburgh
Submitted by ecaGraphics
"Okay, on first glance, I thought it looked like a cute place, somewhere to try out for dinner one night...mmm...the sign is so misleading as to what the restaurant is all about. Pink Olive pledges "honest, unfussy, real food". There is nothing honest, unfussy, or real about this sign. I've never heard of a pink olive, the typography is cutsie and curly, hallmarks of things fussy and overdone. Even choosing the color pink is reminiscent of Barbie and what's honest, unfussy, and real about Barbie?
Peeking inside, the place looks nice, a bit posh but the menu looks like comfort food...but served...maybe a deconstructed version of the various comfort foods. All around the design does not match the concept of the restaurant...and neither does the food."

The Whisky Shop
Victoria Street
Edinburgh

"Lovely storefront. No fuss, just plain whisky. The dark exterior reflects the aged aspect of whisky while the orange relates to the color of the distilled beverage. Window display is pretty straightforward as is the advertisement. No crazy in your face poster, just to the point. Overhead small sign (not the one painted on the facade) is hard to read from a distance, but street sign makes up for it. The encircled W is also a nice addition, making passersby curious and look to the sign for explanation. Typography is nice...no glaring issues...just perhaps the K and Y kerning."

Orchid Bag at Marks & Spencer
Princes Street
Edinburgh

"Another find at Marks & Spencer. The mini orchid bag is pretty nifty and durable. Keeps the delicate flower protected while carrying it home through the bustling streets. Handles are sturdy and well-attached. The plastic bag has holes in it allowing the plant to breathe as well. Also a good gift, just shove some tissue paper down in the bag and remove the sticker.
Only issue: I'm not exactly sure how to carry home the larger ones, the bags are so massive and tall, you'd have to lift it up or put it over your shoulder to carry it without dragging the bag."

"Love Marks & Spencer's store design. Extraordinary attention to detail, mood lighting for an intimate experience, beautiful photography and typography on packaging, and a lovely array of products in an eye-pleasing ROY G BIV display.
Photography on the packaging is well-composed and appetising, not in your face. Typography is lovely and straightforward, relaxed. Their identity is truly effective and true to who they are."

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People Bus Board
South Clerk Street
Edinburgh

"Uhh...what is that thing in Simon Pegg's head? Buses all over the city are advertising this new movie but honestly, after seeing this advertisement many, many times, I still did not know the name of the movie, the other actors/actresses or anything about it...the whatever in the middle of his forehead was way too distracting. I even had to go home and look it up to not only learn the title but also to make sure it wasn't something pertaining to the movie...or in the movie poster itself. By the way, it's not...just a lack of forethought and planning on the designer's part. Nice job. Otherwise, not too bad.

Cameron Presentations Black Cab
North Bridge
Edinburgh
Submitted by ecaGraphics
"Images here are quite awful; the sketchy quality and multi-colored graphics are hard to decipher when cabs are whizzing past. The text on a circular baseline is also barely readable in a short second. Cameron Presentations' logo is also poorly designed and quite weak...multi-colored and uppercase stolen sheep typography—tacky and weird. Seriously, why would you want these people doing presentations for you?"

Sugar Puffs
Nicolson Street
Edinburgh
Submitted by ecaGraphics

"Serious mayonnaise effect on this box of Sugar Puffs. Image and text are smeared all over the front of the box not allowing for any white space or any sort of decent composition. I could barely find a spot for the sticker. The "Honey Monster" is a bit frightening and the only glimpse into what the cereal *might* look like. Hope not. There's some awful typography, more outlines and drop shadows. Oh, and there is even a lens flare...no wonder the shelf is full despite the half price sale.

Also, ridiculously long manifesto about the company's commitment to the environment (thus the +)...centered type with an outline and a widow...on a squished, full color picture, printed on glossy vinyl. Super environmentally friendly.

By choosing a simple, straightforward, and resonating symbol, passersby of any age immediately get the message even in a second's glance. The orange facade is a standout next to all the grey stone buildings and further pushes the quirkiness and nostalgia of this unique shop."
